KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce signed a two-year extension with the Chiefs in April, which would indicate he has no plans to retire following this season.

But Kelce is 35 years old, has helped the Chiefs win three Super Bowl championships and is one of the best tight ends in NFL history. Away from football, Kelce has started doing more work in Hollywood during the offseason.

All of that has led to chatter about Kelce’s possible retirement following the season.

During an interview with ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith last week, Kelce was asked if girlfriend Taylor Swift had encouraged him to step away from football. Kelce said Swift fully supports him.

Later in the talk, Kelce was asked what it would take to quit football. Kelce said if he was hurting the team, he wouldn’t want to play.

“I’m excited for these next couple games, to play up at Arrowhead, to finish this season off and I’ll reevaluate it as I always do,” Kelce told Smith. “And I’ll probably tell myself how much I love this thing and I’ll come back next year.”

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was asked during his weekly interview on 96.5 The Fan if he had thought about the possibility of Kelce playing his final game in Kansas City.

If Kelce steps down after the season, the Chiefs’ game against the Bills on Sunday in the AFC championship game would be his last at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

“I have no idea,” Mahomes said. “He hasn’t said anything to me if he’s thinking that. So I know he signed a two-year extension before the season, and he seems like he still loves football. But he also has a great life, as well. So either way, I just appreciate every single time I step on the field with that guy, knowing that he’s a true legend of not only the Chiefs but of the NFL.

“And if it’s his last game, let’s go out there and get him a win. If it’s not his last game, let’s go and win anyways.”
