Does he Bible tell us to continue looking and praying for peace?

on

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: Our society is so saturated in “me” that few people, few families, give thought to what Christmas really means. Our world is in turmoil and it’s hard to imagine true peace. The news carries the beat of a funeral drum – doom and gloom – instead of casting our eyes and hearts on the starry heavens and remembering that the Prince of Peace was born. It is difficult to share this great news under such dark days as we live now. But the Bible tells us to continue looking and praying for peace, right? – C.H.

A: On that memorable night in the Judean hills of Bethlehem 2,000 years ago, this was the song of the angels: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests” (Luke 2:14, NIV).

Though the centuries have rolled by, still the world longs for and looks for the peace that the angels announced. Where is this peace? Clearly it is not evident in the world, with its constant fighting and conflicts.

This peace abides instead in the hearts of all those who have trusted in God’s grace. In the same proportion that the world has trusted Christ, it has peace. There can be no lasting peace until Christ has come to the hearts of people and brought them His peace. There is no discord in Heaven, there is no strife in Heaven, for Christ reigns supreme there. Similarly, in the heart where Christ abides and reigns, His words become a reality: “Peace I leave with you” (John 14:27, NKJV). The truth of these words has been proven in human experience over and over again. We should thank our Heavenly Father every day for the peace He gives. Are we tuned in enough to recognize it?
