Making sure the kids are alright

By Michael Roizen, M.D. and Mehmet Oz, M.D. on

When The Who sang "The Kids Are Alright," they were hoping it was true. But it's looking like it's a hope that we haven't been able to deliver on. However, that doesn't mean that you can't turn that around today -- and see great results.

Two recent studies are instructive. First, a recent one published in Nutrients found that 66% of the baby food sold in U.S. grocery stores is unhealthy and doesn't meet minimal nutritional recommendations (there are no established requirements). On top of that, virtually 100% fail to meet the standards for baby food nutrition that the World Health Organization is promoting. And baby food products lie on the packaging!

The researchers found that almost 100% had at least one prohibited claim on their packaging -- many had four to 11! And foods loaded with refined flour and sugar were often given a product name of a healthy fruit, hoping you wouldn't read the ingredient label.

The second study shows that 20% of U.S. kids are obese, not just overweight. That comes from poor nutrition and exposure to ingredients and chemicals in highly processed foods. The health repercussions include premature heart disease, elevated blood pressure, early-onset diabetes, and other chronic health challenges.

The good news? You can change all of that. Feed your young'uns freshly prepared, non-processed fruits, vegetables and lean proteins, and eliminate sweetened beverages and highly processed foods. Build a family-wide habit of healthy eating and exercise. For more ideas, check out "Family Wellness Essentials: Key Nutrients for Optimal Health" at iHerb.com/blog.
