DETROIT — Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, whom some see as a potential candidate for president in 2028, will be the special guest at a Michigan Democratic Party dinner in Detroit on April 18, the party announced Friday.
Michigan Democrats plan to recognize Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who is in her eighth and final year as the state's governor, at their 2026 Legacy Dinner, an annual fundraising event. Beshear and Whitmer are the current leaders of the Democratic Governors Association. Beshear is the chairman. Whitmer is the vice chairwoman.
"I'm excited to honor Gov. Whitmer and stand with Michigan Democrats as they work to continue moving Michigan forward this November," Beshear said in a statement of his upcoming appearance in Michigan.
This year's Legacy Dinner takes place the night before the April 19 endorsement convention in Detroit, where party members pick nominees for attorney general, secretary of state and other state offices.
Recent past speakers at the Michigan Democratic Party's Legacy Dinner events include former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate Kamala Harris and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker.
Beshear is in his second term as Kentucky's governor. He previously served as the conservative-leaning state's attorney general.
"Leading Kentucky, Gov. Beshear has focused on the pocketbook issues that matter most to working families and shown what it takes to win tough elections," said Curtis Hertel, chairman of the Michigan Democratic Party. "With crucial races up and down the ballot this year, our 2026 Legacy Dinner will ensure Michigan Democrats have the resources needed to win across the state."
