Salmonella recall of an organic food product sold by Whole Foods and Amazon
Published in News & Features
Organic chia seeds sold at Whole Foods Market and on Amazon.com have been pulled by the manufacturer because they might have salmonella contamination.
Navitas Organics’ recall notice, posted to the FDA website, said it yanked eight lots of Organic Chia Seeds “as a precautionary measure following a recall initiated by the company’s chia seed supplier.”
The Novato, California-based company said, as of Friday, there aren’t any reports of salmonella in any finished chia seed product.
This covers 8-ounce packs in lot Nos. W31025283, W31025286 and W31025287, with a best by date of April 2027; and W31025311, W31025314, W31025315, W31025316 and W31025317, with a best by date of May 2027.
Return the recalled seeds to the store or online retailer for a refund or at least throw them away so deep into the garbage that pets can’t get to them. Questions about the recall should be directed to Navitas at 855-215-5702, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Eastern time.
Salmonella infects about 1.35 million people in the United States each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but only about one in 30 cases are diagnosed. The vast majority people endure the stomachaches and diarrhea through four to seven days without seeking professional medical attention. Bloody urine or diarrhea signals that a doctor visit is necessary.
