ORLANDO, Fla. — A protester was arrested by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office on Friday during a rally against mass deportation in Orlando on Friday, OCSO said. The arrest happened as demonstrators gathered outside the ICE facility on Delegates Drive.
According to the arrest affidavit, Alexis Brianna Clark, 23, allegedly blocked the path of and then struck a gray Chevrolet Impala that was identified as a federal law enforcement vehicle. Clark is being charged with assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer without violence.
In the report, a deputy said they observed Clark — who was wearing a black motorcycle helmet over a ski mask — punch the passenger side-mirror housing and the passenger side window of the vehicle. After additional protesters started to yell and approach the Impala, deputies on their bicycles began to approach. They said in the report they believed the situation was going to get physical or violent.
Deputies attempted to arrest Clark who, according to the report, was resisting. Clark was later taken to the ground and handcuffed before being escorted inside the ICE office.
Confrontations between agents of the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency and protesters have grown increasingly violent across the country in recent weeks, as federal officers assert their right to use force. However, there have been few such incidents in Central Florida.
“The right of all people to peacefully assemble or protest is fundamental, and a cornerstone of every American’s First Amendment right to free speech,” Sheriff John Mina said in a statement. “What is not protected, however, is the destruction of property or violence against any member of our community.”
As of Friday evening, Clark was being held held on a $1,000 bond.
